How High School Courses Work

Enroll Anytime

You can enroll in high school courses anytime of the year. Courses, which are presented in units and lessons, include:

  • Reading assignments
  • Self-check activities
  • Practice activities
  • Projects
  • Unit evaluations
  • Progress tests

Work at Your Own Pace

You can take five weeks to one year to complete a course. Study when it's most convenient for you, and progress through courses at your own pace.

Not all students learn the same way. Our individualized study approach fits the learning styles of many different types of students.

Teachers are an E-mail or Phone Call Away

If you have questions, teachers are available by phone and e-mail. Our teachers have an average of 9.5 years of experience working at Independent Study High School.

Access to Courses No Matter Where You Live

We offer a variety of delivery formats to meet your needs. Course content is offered online, in print, on CD ROM, or a combination of these. The content and instructions serve as the instructor's voice, guiding you through concepts and assignments for successful completion. Textbooks and other course materials may either be purchased from ISHS or from any other book seller that carries the required materials.

Online High School Courses

You'll receive an e-mail on how to access the online course management system, WayCool, which is included as part of your tuition. WayCool helps keep your course information organized in one place, whether you enroll in one or many courses. Through WayCool, you can access your online course content, coursework, grades, and instructional feedback. Most online courses have the option to also purchase printed course content.

Print High School Courses

Printed course content (also called a syllabus) can be purchased in addition to online content. The course syllabus allows you to access course information offline and also makes for a great study reference. A few of our courses are only available in a printed format. In these cases the print syllabus is required upon enrollment.

Submit Assignments Online or by Postal Mail

Most assignments are submitted online through our course management system, WayCool. Some lessons may be electronically transferred to ISHS through an online file DropBox. A few assignments, like art projects, must be mailed to ISHS.

All progress tests, whether submitted online or by mail, are administered by an approved proctor.

Graded and Non-graded Assignments

Courses include graded and non-graded assignments. You will submit all graded assignments. However, it is important to complete non-graded assignments to learn the content and prepare for the graded evaluations and progress tests.

Core and elective courses use a standard four-point grading scale. Advanced Placement courses use a five-point grading scale. Refer to the grading scale for letter grade and percent scale equivalents.
