From the Principal
This year the Independent Study High School is celebrating 80 years of providing distance education to high school students. We are proud of the academic service that we have continued to provide for our students and schools since 1929.
Our primary goal is to prepare high school students for graduation. Whether you have chosen to use the Independent Study High School to supplement your local courses or to earn your diploma through the ISHS, I would like to personally thank you for being a part of our school. You have chosen to use distance education to complete your graduation requirements and this will serve you well as you move to the next academic level after high school. You will find that almost every university will offer a variety of courses online. That will make your ISHS experience valuable, as on-line learning becomes the norm rather than the exception.
If you are graduating this year, the ISHS congratulates you on reaching a major academic milestone. Our best wishes to you! If you are currently enrolled and graduation is a year or more away, we encourage you to focus on your goals while enjoying high school and working to the best of your abilities. Sincerely,
Barry Stark |

Course Highlight: Introduction to Film Studies
Do you watch movies regularly? Have you ever waited impatiently for a movie to be released? Have you ever discussed, or even argued about, why a movie was good or bad? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you may be a “movie buff.” However, have you ever thought about what makes movies so special? Is it the storylines, the actors, or maybe the special effects?
Introduction to Film Studies (ARTH 019 055), will introduce you to the world of cinema and film. The course will define film as an art, explain how film tells stories, discuss the mechanics of making an effective film, summarize the different genres of film, and discuss how films have changed over the years.
This online course, which also contains many movie clips, discusses films ranging from the first one ever made—Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat, in Paris, France, in 1895—to films of today.
